Dirk van der Hoeven

Since January 2024 I am an assistant professor at the Mathematical Institute of Leiden University. Here I work on problems in mathematical machine learning. My main research interests are related to online learning, statistical learning, and optimization. At Leiden University I teach in the bachelor mathematics, the master mathematics, and the master statistics and data science. In 2025 I obtained a Veni (€320K) that will fund my research for four years.

In 2023 I was a postdoc at the University of Amsterdam with dr. Tim van Erven. Before that I spent two years as a postdoc at Università degli Studi di Milano with Prof.dr. Nicolò Cesa-Bianchi. I obtained my PhD from Leiden University under the supervision of dr. Tim van Erven.
